Past Continuous Tense'in kullanım alanları şu şekildedir.
1) Şu anda olmakta olan bir durumu anlatmak için kullanılır.
I am reading a book.
He is giving her a flower.
We are having a party.
2) Şu anda olmayan ama olmak üzere olan (olmasına az kalmış) bir durumu anlatmak için kullanılır.
I am working on my project. (Şu anda düşünüyorum ama hemen başlayacağım manasında.)
They are studying english together. (Aynı kursa gidiyorlar şu anda yürüyorlar mesela.)
Her mother is teaching in the university. (Universitede çalışıyor şu anda işe gidiyor manasında.)
Mesela şöyle bir durum olabilir. Kedi çalıların arkasında dikkatle kuşları izliyor ve saldırmak üzere iken Past Continuous Tense kullanırız yine.
Çünkü çok kısa bi süre içinde saldırıp kuş avlayacaktır.
The cat is hunting bird.
Diyelimki küçük çocuk bahçede çiçek topluyor. Onları annesine getirecek.
The child is bringing flowers to his mother.
Yukarıdaki beş örnekte özneler konuşma anında o işi yapmıyorlar ama yapmak üzereler. Bu gibi durumlarda Past Continuous Tense kullanılır.
3) Çok yakın bir gelecekte oluşacak olan durumlar için de kullanılır.
I am baking cookies this afternoon.
He is joining us for dinner tonight.
I am watching soccer match on tv in the evening.
Thi children are visiting their grandmothers tomorrow.

Olumsuz cümle yapısı kullanılırken am/is/are not kullanılır.
